Description:
The Consortium of Gavi was born in 1993 in order to protect, enhance and serve the interests relating to the Designation of Origin. Represents about 75% of the production of Gavi and has 200 member producers (64 bottlers) which in 2004 celebrated its 30th anniversary by achieving DOC (1974) and 6 of the DOCG (1998).
Its business is divided into two parts: supervision, in cooperation with appropriate institutions, production, vinification and bottling of GAVI DOCG, and promotion of the name.
In 2004 the Consortium of Gavi was the first in Italy to have completed the revision of the register of vineyards. Through visits by inspectors on the ground and aerial photographs, was photographed exactly the area of Gavi DOCG, both from the register, so the exact area - equal to 1,075 hectares in 11 municipalities defined - whether in the ampelographic: in fact we can proudly declare that the vineyards are only screws Cortese for the production of Gavi in purity, as required by the specification.
Tracking, or control of the supply chain from vineyard to table, it is essential for the protection of the name and the consumer: for this purpose the Consortium has included a page on this site dedicated to it, where you can verify the originality of the purchased Gavi by entering the series and number of tape affixed to the neck of the bottle: it will have information about the manufacturer, type, vintage and period of bottling.
The "Project of clonal selection" in collaboration with the Improving Lives of the CNR Turin, directed by Dr.. Mannini, provides for the approval of new cuttings in 2007, owned by the Consortium, the specific characteristics of healthy and typical of the grape. This success is the result of nine years of searching for the best plants Cortese carried out in many vineyards of the denomination, the experts of the CNR have then selected the most interesting phenotypes, works in experimental vineyards (the last in the spring of 2005) that led further selection of the most rooted and healthy phenological relevant.
Another function of the Consortium is to implement initiatives designed to enhance and support of the wine industry both nationally and internationally.
In Italy considerable prominence can be attributed to international trade fairs in the wine industry, such as “Vinitaly” in spring and the “Salone del Vino” in Turin in the autumn, which participates in the Consortium with its own stand, tastings and promotions to consumers in and experts
Among the Prowein international trade fairs in Düsseldorf in Germany found a great success, being the largest market for the German Gavi DOCG. ? Inside the stand, the Consortium and it has to taste the wines of the associated companies who can accommodate the buyers.
Next to the institutional protection and promotion of particular importance for the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi services offered to member companies.?In addition to the aforementioned promotion in all the fairs in Italy and abroad, members benefit from accurate and timely information about the new regulations (the Consortium is in fact a member of the Piedmont and Winegrowers of Federdoc).
In the international wine scene, given the aggressive competition from emerging countries, the winning strategy is to retain the consumer with the right balance between quality and price and a strong reminder of their link with the terroir, which convey to a growing number visitors. It must also educate residents winemakers and wine culture as a fundamental presence of a territory: this is the challenge for the future and the Consorzio Tutela del Gavi has laid the foundation for one of the protagonists.
